What are Topography Maps? Topography maps show the elevation of earth's surface. Some of them use color gradients, as is done in the Hawaii map on your right. Some topography maps use lines of equal elevation as in the Short Gap map and others use terrain shading as in the topography map of The Narrows. Topography maps are used by hunters, hikers, scientists, serach and rescue teams, anglers, the military and many others. Topography maps, more formally known as topographic maps and less formally referred to as "topo" maps, have been produced for all 50 US states. They can be purchased on paper, CD-ROM, and through online mapping services.
